The Roebuck

Standing opposite the village green, The Roebuck will leave a lasting impression – painted bright yellow and green on the outside and full of quirky character inside.

Dating back to the 16th century, this pub with bed-and-breakfast was refurbished and re-opened under new management in May 2015. There is a large single bar area with alcoves leading off it and to the right down a couple of steps, a large ballroom-type room ideal for special functions (still being restored). The story goes that the legendary actress Diana Dors performed here in cabaret.

A 'curiosity cabinet' of a pub that has its own unique and idiosyncratic style with the help of a number of local artists and craftspeople. As soon as you walk through the pub’s front entrance an eye-catching copper-clad bar grabs your attention, and as you look further you will soon discover many interesting and wonderful fittings scattered around, such as the cogwheel brackets for the wall lights, shelving behind the bar made with pipes and valves, and a moving sculpture of cogwheels on the wall. The urinals in the Gents are worth a visit if you're a male, otherwise if you’re female then ask him to take a photo!

What also stands out here at The Roebuck is the friendly approach of the owners Tony and Dominic, who have stamped their fun personality all over this village pub.

The guest beers are from Sussex breweries and also smaller breweries from further afield and the guest ciders change regularly.

An interesting choose of home-prepared dishes appear on the regularly changing menu, including some excellent vegetarian options, backed up by an equally good wine list. Chef Dom’s cooking reflects local and seasonal produce, and the full-cooked breakfast is particularly memorable for his home-made granola.

In a separate building, the four bedrooms are very clean, comfy and decorated in pretty ‘dolly-mixture’ colours. Tea, coffee and delicious home-cooked cookies are a lovely generous touch, plus luxury bath and body products enhance the modern bathrooms. Two of the double rooms are behind a self-contained locked door making them ideal for families and larger groups.

Dotted with wild-flower beds, the large pub garden is fenced and safe for children; kids will love the resident micro pigs, Bramble and Primrose, and the free-roaming chickens that deliver eggs for breakfast.

The Roebuck nestles in the heart of the Sussex countryside, where the rolling South Downs meet the forests of the Weald. It is the perfect base for walking and cycling and exploring the idyllic villages nearby and the historic county town of Lewes.

For a country home-from-home, a welcoming retreat, warm and friendly service, tasty food, stunning local beers and ciders, excellent wines and a genuine taste of Sussex hospitality, The Roebuck might be just what you've been looking for.
