The Pheasant, Gestingthorpe

This authentic country pub with no airs and graces is excellent at what it does: delicious fresh food, fabulous 5-star rooms, wonderful breakfasts, and all in a rural, unspoilt setting. Hands-on hosts, James and Diana, are motivated by having satisfied customers.

The charming understated building, with a vegetable garden to the front just across a quiet road, is totally enclosed by peaceful countryside. A delightful garden (designed by owner and former garden designer James), featuring an interesting platform over the pond, captures superb views of the rural scene beyond.

Inside, three light, airy and tasteful furnished bars preserve a feeling of history in this 500-year-old pub. Pictures of pheasants and hares adorn the walls and wood-burning fires in all bars give a true country feel. Real local ales are available on tap, and not to be missed is the pubs very own Pleasant Pheasant bitter.

Food is ‘to die for’, according to a comment in the guest book. All ingredients that go into each carefully prepared dish are local – they grow their own fruit and vegetables – and everything is homemade, including the bread. Even the honey used for dressings and salads comes from bees kept by James!

The five boutique-style bedrooms, two on the ground floor with French windows opening onto the garden, are impeccably designed and have lovely views over the countryside. (One has a wet room suitable for disabled visitors). The four-poster room boasts a panoramic countryside view. Each room is inspired by local iconic figures such as Gainsborough and Constable. Wake refreshed the next morning to a tasty breakfast that features on the menu salmon smoked personally by your hosts.
