The Lion

At the centre of the village, this beautiful Tudor-era gastro-pub, with a modern twist, offers home-cooked food, a fine selection of wines from the onsite wine shop, a great selection of beers and spirits and a wonderfully atmospheric place to eat and drink.

The Lion was sympathetically restored in 2015 while enhancing the many beautiful aspects of this much-loved building. The building is a mix of four historic sections − the earliest parts built in the 14th century or early 15th century − and several modern ones, and has had many guises though out its long history, from Guild Hall and cottage to ale house, pub and hotel.

An informal open-plan bar area with large windows is beautifully presented with cool grey/cream walls and original beams. The more intimate dining room, the Hunt Room is a good contrast with red walls, warm lighting and antique-style furnishings.

The staff are wery welcoming and enthusiastic to maintain a high standard. On offer is a fantastic range of ales, some from the local Brewery just up the road in Wakes Colne, all kept in optimum condition in the 21st-century cellar. You simply peruse the cellar, grab your wine of choice from more than 80 bins, and take it to a member of staff who will serve it accordingly, or you can take it home with a sizable discount.

All of the mains are cooked in a wood-fired oven with a variety of pizzas, which can be customised to suit your tastes, and the flagship Bavette steak is a favourite. Have one of the lovely desserts to complete the experience and perhaps a coffee to round things off.

Homemade cakes and biscuits are also available at the bar for morning coffee and afternoon tea, and a nice touch is the fruit and vegetable stall outside in the carpark selling local produce (and other fruits/veg too) (Wednesday 9am-4.30pm).

The Colne Valley is lovely for walking. It's not too far from Colchester, which is a major historical Roman and medieval town and also Coggeshall, a pretty village  with a National Trust medieval property.
