The Bear & Ragged Staff

This rather good, picturesque watering hole is slap bang in the middle of the Test Valley, ideally situated for outside pursuits - the pub is often used by walkers who call in for a freshly prepared cup of coffee before heading off to enjoy the views.

Although recently refurbished inside to give a fresh and more contemporary look the character still remains. In the pleasantly roomy space stylish soft furnishings effectively intermingle with ancient roaring fires to provide a comfortable cosy feel during the winter, while in summer the large outdoor patio and garden is a great spot for soaking up the stunning scenery.

There is nothing more pleasing than the joyous sound of diners savouring genuine tasty home cooking, and this pub is never short of customers who flock here to do just that. The food hits the spot every time, which is hardly surprising as top-quality, fresh local produce takes priority: trout from Kimbridge Trout Farm, ice cream from Laverstock Farm, fresh eggs and meat from Chalcroft Farm in Hampshire, cheeses from Lyburn and Loosehanger, and game in season from local shoots. The enthusiastic young chef and his team cook every dish from scratch with pride and passion, served with a smile by friendly and knowledgeable staff. Traditional and modern, continental and very English can all be found on the menu.

Beer is also a feature, with the local Romsey Double Drop beer from Flack Manor taking centre stage.
