Snowdrop Inn

A Lewes gem that you won’t want to miss! Tucked away on the edge of town down by the boat dock overlooking the chalk cliffs, this is the perfect place to finish a hike, particularly as many trails lead back to it.

Built in 1850, behind the romantic sounding Snowdrop Inn lays a more tragic tale. The pub does not get its name from the spring flower but from being the place where the worst-ever snow avalanche in England took place (hence the name) on 27 December 1836.

The quirky Snowdrop Inn is very in keeping with the arty county town of Lewes. The outside is painted olive green while inside the lively and colourful décor features iconic artwork on the walls by local artists. The pub itself is well laid out with a square bar in the centre and lots of tables squeezed in. There is also an upstairs area, accessed via a very steep and narrow spiral staircase and if you’re bringing the family you’ll find a box of toys and books to keep the little ones occupied (plus dog chews for the furry ones!). Two beer gardens either side of the pub add sufficient tables for outdoor dining.

This is a totally laid-back pub with friendly and helpful staff and the place is always buzzing – testament to how popular it is. Live music evenings are a big draw with locals who also flock here for the ever-changing, extensive menu. The kitchen team make the most of fresh local produce available from the surrounding area, turning out perfectly cooked, innovative dishes. All the meat served is free-range and reared to exemplary welfare standards by local farmers, and vegetarians are extremely well-cared for.

The pub has built up a wide-spread reputation for offering an incredible range of carefully looked after craft beers, and has links with local Sussex brewers – in 2012 it won London and South region ‘Cask Beer Pub of the Year’ and also ‘Food Pub of the Year’. Their annual Beer Expo is a very popular event and always draws a huge crowd.
