Fox & Hounds

You’ll discover this quaint little building nestled in the Vale of the White Horse near Lambourn of race-horse fame. The charming village of Uffington has beautiful thatched cottages, a 13th-century church and several literary connections − it was the early home of Thomas Hughes, whose book Tom Brown's Schooldays begins in the old school here, and John Betjeman lived here in the 1930's and 40's.

The Fox & Hounds makes an ideal base for walking, cycling and horse-riding with the Ridgeway national trail passing nearby. Secure bike storage is offered for guests at the pub. Wildlife abounds in the area – relax with a drink in one of the many outside areas and you might be lucky enough to see red kites flying overhead.

Welcoming and caring staff adhere to high standards most evident in the excellent food, the selection of fine real ales and the spacious accommodation. Sociable owners Janet and Michael are always on hand and happy to assist by giving lifts and showing guests around the village.

Everything on the menu is homemade and incorporates local meat and vegetables, and also herbs grown on site by Janet. Local venison and pheasant also appears on the menu in season. Dinner is served in the sunny garden room with superb views of the White Horse on the hill beyond and sometimes ‘the hunt’ as it passes by. The beamed bar with a log-burning fire also provides a very pleasant space for a pint and a chat.

Four self-contained Swiss-chalet style rooms are all at ground level and one room is fully adapted for wheelchair users and has extra beds to accommodate families. All have wet rooms and are nicely decorated in classic neutral shades with king-size beds. Two have small verandas from which guests can sit and enjoy unrivalled views of the surrounding rolling countryside. Well-behaved dogs are very welcome to stay as well – the owners have two dogs of their own and are exceptionally dog friendly.

The Fox & Hounds is ideally situated for visiting the historic city of Oxford and just 6 miles from Wantage, the birthplace of King Alfred the Great and home to the Vale and Downland Museum.  Kelmscott, the former home of the designer William Morris, is about 20 minutes away. Steam Buffs enjoy the railway museums in Swindon and Didcot and children love the Cotswold Wildlife Park, about 40 minutes away.
