Five Bells

The Five Bells is the heart of this pretty village, sitting in a truly lovely position overlooking the Colne Valley – the magnificent view is timeless, with trees and fields and hedgerows, and little to remind you of the 21st century.

Colne Engaine is the archetypal village with a green, a church opposite the pub, a school and a village shop. The pub name originates from the five bells in the church tower – although the church now has a sixth bell – and the bell ringers still meet here after their weekly practice.

Refurbished in 2013, the pub has been completely redecorated with beautiful new wood floors and luxurious toilet facilities (even though the Five Bells won ‘Loo of the Year’ in 2004 and 2005, landlords Darran and Caroline are not resting on their laurels!). The dining room has the original exposed timbers and above the main dining area is a gallery that is perfect for small groups. In contrast to the cosy and historic dining room, the bar area is light and airy. Outside, the raised terrace is the perfect spot to enjoy the sunshine and take in the view.

The Five Bells has been part of village tradition for many years and there are still many reminders of its place in the community inside the pub. There’s a list on the wall of all pub landlords dating back to 1579, and in the bar area is a montage displaying local celebrities such as X Factor’s Matt Cardle. Above the fireplace by the bar is another piece of contemporary local art: four pictures showing the view from the pub across the Colne Valley in spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Food is good, with generous portions and a specials menu that changes every day. Sandwiches are all made with home-made bread and local ham. There’s an extensive selection of wine available by the glass or the bottle, and always a good selection of guest beers.

There are lots of good walks in this part of Essex, and walking groups regularly use the Five Bells as a meeting place.

The string of awards won by the Five Bells demonstrates that this is a pub that takes quality and customer service seriously:

Best Community Pub of the Year 2011

BII Licensee of the Year 2011

Best Family Pub in the Great British Pub Awards 2015
