The Cherry Tree, Stoke Row, Oxfordshire

Originally three cottages, parts of which date back 500 years, this wisteria-clad, red-brick building has been a pub for over 200 years. Following a much welcomed refurbishment by the new hosts, this historic country pub in the woods at Stoke Row now has a new lease of life. You just have to turn into the car park to see the transformation.

This is everything a great country pub should be, with the charming exterior only a prelude to what is behind the front door. The bar area exudes an air of sophistication, where higher tables with bar stools accommodate casual drinkers, and original ceiling beams, flagstone floors and tiny cottage windows don’t look out of place. There are several other skillfully designed eating areas decorated in a more contemporary style of varied textures, woods and colours.

When the sun comes out, the garden at the front has a country chic feel about it – the terrace of solid wooden furniture and summer flowers is a perfect spot to enjoy a few beers, a bottle of good wine or a long lingering lunch. Food is very much key here, with menus changing every four weeks and a daily specials board. The chef comes from an accomplished culinary background and his food is full of innovation yet still showcasing many pub favourites. Use of local suppliers’ ingredients and produce is foremost; in fact many locally foraged items to be found on the menu.

The four kingsize guest rooms in the barn alongside have a clean, crisp and contemporary look and are equipped with all modern amenities and good-sized modern bathrooms. The breakfast is so good it’s worth staying over just for that.
