Black Horse

This picture-postcard country inn set in delightful gardens was listed in the Doomsday Book. Built in 1800, the cottage-style building surrounded by a pretty linked fence is enhanced by a colourful display of flower tubs and hanging baskets in season.

Enter the wooden latched door to a low-ceilinged reception area and cosy bar with lots of beams and a rather unusual bar, where a comprehensive range of drinks is served. The eclectic mix of furnishings varies from the traditional to the modern and to the slightly quirky, and there is plenty of upholstered bench seating to suffice when it gets crowded.

The bar merges into the open-plan Upper and Lower dining rooms, where the décor and furnishings become more contemporary: modern wooden furnishings and upholstered bench seats work in harmony with the old brick fireplace and wooden beams. As the name suggests, this area looks on to a heated paved patio, encircled by a white picket fence with a well-groomed grass area beyond. The separate Courtyard dining room is yet even more stylish, and from here there is access to the new walled courtyard complete with water feature.
When it comes to food, you can choose from an extensive range of hot and cold meals served in either the bar or any of the dining areas, all prepared using local ingredients. At the Black Horse they pride themselves on looking after the customer and have gained a reputation of offering excellent fresh food in a friendly and welcoming environment. So much so, they were voted ‘Best Dining Pub in Bedfordshire’ by the Good Pub Guide 2013.

Two chalet-style double bedrooms, beautifully presented and finished to a high standard, offer comfortable accommodation. Both are ensuite and have large rain-dance showers, king-size beds, I-Pod docking stations, and their own patio area.
