Alford Arms

This unsung little gem of a pub, set in a delightful village in the heart of the Chilterns with a vineyard directly behind, brings back fond memories of what a real English country pub should be. It may be a tad harder to find but you won’t regret making the effort.

The Alford Arms is for everyone, from first-time visitors and fine diners to the regulars and locals who call it their second home – you may even have to step over a dog or two on your way to the bar. This is how it’s always been and how the current hosts want to keep it. A happy crew is always on hand with a bit of friendly banter to make everyone feel welcome – they believe “a warm welcome is as good as a perfect Sunday roast – so why not have both?”

Beer is the backbone of any pub, and real ales served here include brews from the award-winning Red Squirrel brewery just up the hill in Potten End and Tring Brewery just down the road. The unusual selection of European wines has been chosen to cut down the wine miles.

From field to farm, hedgerow to forest, the sound of the sea and the thrill of the hunt, food is a passion here. Old English favourites are brought to life with a twist or two by the Head Chef, who blends his light touch and great skills with knockout flavours. The menu moves with the seasons and specials on the chalkboard add a new freshness and invention each day. Local produce is paramount, ethically sourced and handled with care – Bread from the local artisan baker Rex Bakery, Oil from PE Mead in Tring, chicken from Timpson’s smallholding and delicious sausages from Chiltern Fish and Game.

Once again named “Hertfordshire Dining Pub of the Year” in the Good Pub Guide 2015, this is the 10th time The Alford Arms has been awarded this honour since 2003 – and that says it all.
